What is an Area of Dominant Influence (ADI)?

This is a common term used in licensing.

An Area of Dominant Influence (ADI) is the geographic area or market reached by a certain radio or television station. It is used by advertisers and rating companies to determine a station’s potential audience. This helps determine the rate a songwriter is paid for being broadcast on a given station.

For instance, New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago ranked at the top of a Marketing Systems Group list in the early 2000s, while small cities in Montana (Helena), Nebraska (North Platte), and Michigan (Alpna) represented the other side of the ADI spectrum.
