What Is a Video Buyout?
Negotiating sync licenses
A video buyout is a negotiated right normally included in a synchronization license. It entitles the buyer (licensee) to pay the publisher (licensor) a flat fee for the use of a song rather than royalties per every unit sold (e.g. of a DVD or movie download).
Please note that a video buyout does not mean a complete buyout of the rights themselves. When it comes to licensing deals, the “buyout” is only for the rights specified, including its term and uses. It also refers to a one-time only payment.
