What is the difference between Songtrust and SoundExchange?

Last Updated: Jun 21, 2017 10:25AM EDT
We get questions about SoundExchange very frequently. In short, Songtrust is entirely separate from SoundExchange. They deal with a different type of ownership/collection. Songtrust handles all of your music publishing collection and does not conflict whatsoever with SoundExchange.

SoundExchange collects digital mechanical royalties generated by master recordings on behalf of master owners and performers.  This is completely separate from what Songtrust does, which is collecting royalties generated by compositions on behalf of songwriters and publishers.  If you own your master recordings and/or are a performing artist, you should certainly think about registering with SoundExchange.

The same applies for PPL. There is no conflict.
