What is the difference between ASCAP, BMI, SESAC, and Harry Fox Agency?

Last Updated: May 03, 2013 04:46PM EDT
Whether you are registered with ASCAP, BMI, SESAC, or Harry Fox Agency it makes no difference to us. We will still be able to register your songs and collect your royalties regardless. However, you may be asking what exactly is the difference between all of these agencies. There isn’t much of a difference between ASCAP, BMI, and SESAC (other than size) since they are all Performance Rights Organizations. However, while ASCAP and BMI are open to everyone, SESAC is only available by invitation only. If you are interested in the specific details about each agency you can view our review of each here.
Harry Fox Agency is not a Performance Rights Organization, it is a mechanical licensing agent. Meaning that while ASCAP, BMI, and SESAC are able to collect royalties from your songs being performed in public (via radio, tv, etc), Harry Fox Agency issues licenses and collects and distributes royalties on the behalf of music publishers for the recording and reproduction of CD’s, ringtones, and Internet downloads.
